After arrival the first surprise was that Sheringham is bigger then I expected. The hostel was really close to the station and I received a great welcome by Adrian, the Hostel Manager. He showed me around the Youth Hostel and the staff quarters. In the staff kitchen I met Claudia, another volunteer from Germany.
Together we did some sightseeing in Sheringham, a lovely town with a nice shopping street and a great coast. We took a walk up to the cliffs and got an amazing view over Sheringham, the sea and the area – a great start! On the way back I discovered a lot of small stores with everything that you need and more. Back in the hostel, I met the other staff members. Everyone was really friendly and it felt like home from the beginning. In our free time we watched movies in the staff living room, played games and talked a lot, the best way to get to know each other.
One day after arrival on Thursday I started to work, even though Adrian said I didn’t need to start until Friday. I helped Guy, our kitchen chief, and the other staff members in the kitchen and we prepared a dinner for 40 guests. Plenty of work for everyone, but a lot of fun as well. On my first working day, I finished early and ate dinner in the living room.
During the following 10 days, I worked in every part of the hostel. The kitchen was my favourite place to work in, but housekeeping can be fun as well. During my stay we had different groups in, so I learned something new every day.
In my free time I travelled around the Norfolk coast and discovered nice places like Cromer, Wells-next-the-sea and Norwich.
For me it was a good experience to combine travel and work. It was fun to improve my English and to get to know nice people. All together I had a great time and would like to work at YHA Sheringham again. I miss the great Team of YHA Sheringham already. It is a wonderful place to be!
