YHA has successfully navigated the unprecedented challenges of the past year and remains at the forefront of efforts to aid the recovery of society.

Our mission to enrich the lives of all — especially young people — through travel and adventure is more important than ever as we seek to reconnect people with each other, nature, the outdoors, culture and heritage. We provide brilliant hostel stays and experiences that improve physical health, mental wellbeing and life skills.

Our 14 Trustees have overall legal responsibility for the charity and work closely with our chief executive officer, James Blake, and his talented executive team. They bring their life experience and their diverse skills to an organisation they love – in some cases because they grew up with it, and in others because they have seen the transformation it can bring to young people.

Board members come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences and work collaboratively, combining the highest degree of professionalism with a relaxed and friendly approach.

What is involved?

Becoming a Trustee is a serious undertaking but one which we believe is hugely rewarding. The Board oversees the implementation of the 2020 strategy and guides the work of the organisation in areas such as finance, risk management and organisational performance.

Board members must be able to work collaboratively, listen to other people’s point of view and offer constructive challenge and criticism. Successful candidates are likely to have had some previous experience on Committees, Panels or Boards.


The commitment is attendance at the AGM and two face-to-face meetings held at YHA hostels (in England and Wales), with three or four other virtual meetings throughout the year held on Saturday mornings. Occasionally we may need you to attend an extra Board meeting by teleconference.

Trustees are also expected to contribute in other ways: for example, as a member of one of the Board committees (with three or four virtual meetings per year) and occasionally by representing YHA at official functions.

Our aim is to reach more people from a wider range of backgrounds, with a particular focus on young people, especially those with challenging lives.
